That old HDMI cable in your drawer is silently killing your TV’s best features

What’s new: As XDA highlights, the single biggest bottleneck for many modern TVs isn’t the panel or the streaming box — it’s the aging HDMI cable still plugged in behind it. Older cables built to earlier HDMI specifications simply don’t carry enough bandwidth to pass through the features newer TVs and consoles advertise, so users unknowingly lose picture and audio quality they already paid for.

Who’s affected

Anyone pairing a recent 4K or 8K TV, a current-generation console (PS5, Xbox Series X), or a high-end PC with a cable that predates the HDMI 2.1 era. Low-bandwidth cables can cap you at lower frame rates and disable advanced features even when both devices support them.

What to do

  • Replace legacy cables with an “Ultra High Speed HDMI” certified cable (48 Gbps) to unlock features like 4K at 120Hz, 8K, and HDR.
  • Make sure you’re plugged into the HDMI 2.1 port on your TV — not every port on the set supports the full bandwidth.
  • Enable variable refresh rate (VRR) and auto low-latency mode (ALLM) in your TV settings for smoother gaming once the cable supports them.
  • Use eARC-capable cables and ports if you want lossless audio passed to a soundbar or receiver.
